Demerit Point Suspension
Here at Gold Coast Lawyers, we have solicitors that specialise in traffic law who can help you if you are in danger of having your licence suspended.
Demerit points are issued to drivers as penalties for offences committed whilst driving. Depending on the type of licence you hold, there will be a maximum amount of demerit points that a driver can accumulate before they are at risk of having their licence suspended.
Why Have I Received Demerit Points?
The most common offences that drivers receive demerit points are:
- speeding offences
- seatbelt offences
- traffic light offences
I’ve received 12 points, What Happens Next?
In a 3-year period, if you lose 12 or more demerit points on an open licence then you will be sent an ‘Accumulation of demerit points – notice to choose’ letter.
Within this, you will be given 2 options.
- Have your licence suspended for an agreed period.
- You can agree to continue driving under a ‘period of good driving’ for one year
If you choose option 2, you will be allocated 1 demerit point for the whole year. If you receive 2 or more demerit points, then your licence will be suspended for double the original period.
If you need advice on demerit point suspension, our experienced traffic solicitors at Gold Coast Lawyers are ready and waiting to help.
